Its finally time to shower the baby! and not because she is dirty, shower her in pressies!!
Baby Showers were traditionally for women only, and were a place for women to share wisdom and lessons in the art of becoming a mother. In Brazil it's called "Cha' de bebe'", which means 'baby morning tea', this was slightly twisted in Costa Rica where its "te' de canastilla" is confusingly translated into "basket tea"...
The hindu's have a variety of names for it, 'godbharaai', 'dohaalijewan' and 'saadh', but the meaning remains the same. Music is played, the pregnant woman is adorned with flowers, bangles and perfumes, and sometimes bathed by the guests (all women) in ayurvedic oil!
Islam gets a little intense about it, with the traditional ceremony including animal sacrifice, however the meat is them distributed among the poor and needy, the family and the household.
The South Africans may hold the origin of the stork bringing the baby, as they call it a "stork party'. They have a variety of silliness such as dress ups, and giving of funny gifts to the mum.
Regardless of the location, we all love our little baby-bundles and are keen to celebrate their entry into our world. We gather our friends and family around us, have some food, drink and have a fun day together.
